The sound emitted by a point sounds quieter the further away you are, obviously. This is because the energy is being spread over a larger area at bigger distances. The above animation shows a good visualisation of this process- the area of the sphere over which the energy is distributed grows quickly.  In fact, the area is proportional to the distance squared.
